The best news I've heard on the professional golf beat recently is the return of Ken Green to the game after losing a leg in a car accident last June.
I always enjoyed Green during my years of covering events on the PGA Tour. He was a maverick and you never knew exactly what he was going to do or say next. But he made covering a tournament fun and if you needed a colorful quote, you knew where to go to get it.
Green is making his comback attempt in a Sunbelt Senior Tour event in West Palm Beach, Fla,, at The Breakers Club March 2. He's wearing a prosthetic leg and has hopes of being the first player to compete on The PGA Champions Tour wearing one.
I'm firmly convinced that if anyone can pull it off, it will be Ken Green. The man knows no boundaries.
Green won five PGA Tour events, and I remember that the first time I ever heard of Mark Calcavecchia, he was carrying the bag for Green in a PGA tournament. I loved the way he would sometimes show up wearing all green, right down to his glove, shoes and socks.
He suffered from some nervous tension poroblems later in his career, but manged to put those devils behind him and was apparently set for a nice run on the Champions Tour before the accident, which killed his fiancee, his brother and his pet dog.
Let's all say a few prayers for this courageous golfer.
